If your vehicle is pulling to the right or left before installing Safe T Plus, yes, it is recommended that front-end alignment service work gets completed first.  Also, if you have any abnormal tire wear (inside or outside of tire(s), then a front-end alignment is recommended.  And lastly, if you feel any vibration or shimmy while driving at certain speeds, you might check with your local service center or alignment shop to see if your wheels are out of balance.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT
How many attempts should it take to center my Safe T Plus?

When installing Safe T Plus, to minimize the needs to adjust and center Safe T Plus, try to sight-line your front wheels as straight as possible. On occasion, a centering adjustment may not be necessary. When a centering adjustment is needed, on average, it generally takes 1-2 attempts to center Safe T Plus. If, however, you find more attempts are necessary, please don’t waste any more time and call our Customer Support Team at 770-322-8727 or support@safe-t-plus.com. We will be happy to help even while you are on the road.

What is the best way to center my Safe T Plus?

Installing Safe T Plus is very straightforward and simple. It takes a little finesse to get it perfectly centered. For Do-It-Yourselfers, it generally takes approximately 30-45 minutes or less to adjust and center Safe T Plus. For Service centers and dealerships, allow for 30 minutes to adjust and center Safe T Plus.

We have a step-by-step video available to walk you through the entire process.

I cannot find my vehicle listed in the Safe T Plus Fit Guide.

Our apologies for not finding your exact Motorhome make and/or model. That does not mean Safe T Plus will not fit your motorhome. A simple solution is to contact our Customer Support Team either by phone 770-322-8727 or by email support@safe-t-plus.com. Provide us with your Motorhome (or Vehicle) Make, Model, and seventeen digit chassis VIN if available. That should be all we need to identify which Safe T Plus Steering Control unit and mounting hardware kit you need. Let us know, we would be happy to help.

Does Safe T Plus have to be mounted parallel to my tie rod?

For best performance of Safe T Plus, practically all of our mounting locations are designed to be parallel to the tie rod. However, some mounts of Safe T Plus are designed to be at slight angles. However, anything beyond a 40 degree angle is not correct. If you find your Safe T Plus is mounted at an angle greater than 40 degrees, stop and give us a direct call 770-322-8727. Let us help you get Safe T Plus installed correct.

Can you mount the Safe T Plus on either side?

Yes and No. How’s that for an answer. We’ll explain. Yes, Safe T Plus will work if the large end or small end is mounted on the tie rod and/or the axle side. For the No, Safe T Plus may have space limitations on certain chassis types and therefore, has to be mounted specifically to our instructions. However, for best installation location on your vehicle, it is recommended that you follow our installation instructions as detailed. If you have any questions prior to mounting your Safe T Plus, please call us first 770-322-8727. We would be happy to help.

How do I measure my tie rod diameter?

The reason for measuring the diameter of your tie rod is to ensure you receive the proper sized U-bolts to mount your tie rod bracket to your tie rod. The best and most accurate method for measuring the diameter of your tie rod is by using a precision measuring tool like a Slide Caliper. Slide Calipers work best for measuring the outside diameters of tie rods. They make digital, dial, and vernier calipers, all of which work fine.

Simply open the calipers, close the calipers around the tie rod, and record the measurement.

My steering wheel is no longer centered after installing Safe T Plus. How can I fix it?

With Safe T Plus installed, it tightens up a lot of looseness in the front steering assembly. You will be able to feel more firmness and control in the steering wheel. On occasion, when Safe T Plus tightens up front end slackness, it could cause the steering wheel to be off-center. Your vehicle tracks straight, but the logo on the steering is not straight. IMPORTANT NOTE: do not attempt to re-center your steering wheel yourself. Steering wheel and column assembly adjustments require expert alignment centers or RV/Chassis factory approved dealers to fix these problems. Contact your local alignment center, RV dealer, Motorhome manufacturer, or chassis manufacturer for direction.

Do I need to remove an existing steering damper before installing my Safe T Plus?

Yes.  Most chassis manufacturers install a general damper on the front axle.  Typically, the mounting location of these dampers will interfere with Safe T Plus’ mounting location.  Safe T Plus contains a heavy-duty hydraulic damping system inside the unit.  It will provide the damping and retardation protection for the vehicle.  Therefore, we recommend removing them before installing your Safe T Plus Steering Control and brackets.

Will my steering wheel be harder to turn with my Safe T Plus?

With Safe T Plus installed, you will immediately notice a more firm, controlled feel in the steering wheel. Plus, if you have any play in the steering wheel, Safe T Plus will tighten up some of the play. No added resistance or difficulty is added to the steering wheel or your driving efforts. You’ll simply feel like you have more control of the vehicle.

My tie rod bracket bent while I accidentally overtightened the U-bolts, will this affect my Safe T Plus?

Do not drive your vehicle if you bent the tie rod bracket during installation. Safe T Plus could get bound up while turning your vehicle which can cause an accident.

Do you have “live” Tech Support available to help me?

Yes, we do. Our Tech Support team is available to assist and help with any technical support (i.e. Installation, Adjustment, other) you need. Our tech support hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (EST).  We would enjoy hearing from you and are glad to help with any needs or questions you may have. We look forward to speaking with you.

Do you recommend using wheel chocks, safety jack stands, safe wheel ramps, safety glasses and gloves before installing Safe T Plus?

Yes, yes, yes, and yes. We cannot emphasize safety and protection enough.  Never compromise safety for shortcuts to install Safe T Plus. We highly recommend using each of these items during the install process. If you need any recommendations on where to purchase any of these items, simply contact our Customer Support Team either by phone 770-322-8727 or by email at support@safe-t-plus.com and one of our team members will be happy to assist you.

With centering and adjusting my Safe T Plus, is it recommended to pull over on a highway?

Highways are very dangerous.  We DO NOT recommend pulling over on any highway to perform an adjustment with Safe T Plus in order to get it centered. In fact, the best process is to plan your route. We recommend a safe, low traffic area to perform a road test with a lot of safe space. The safest areas might include a church parking lot, school parking lots (with school out), Walmart or big box retailer parking lots, or any flat concrete areas with no traffic. Again, planning your route first is the best policy.

Should my vehicle track perfectly straight or is it acceptable to have a slight drift?

Yes, you want to get your Safe T Plus at near perfectly tracking center while driving at highway speeds. If possible, perform your road test and centering drive on a non-windy day on the flattest roads possible. Otherwise, it is challenging to get Safe T Plus dialed-in and perfectly centered.  Also, no two chassis are created equal. So, some chassis steering systems are more sensitive than others. As a result, on occasion, it might require 1-2 extra adjustment attempts.

If you elect to have a Service center or dealership install and center your Safe T Plus, we recommend that you, the customer, accompany the tech on the road test. Once the tech feels he has Safe T Plus centered, please request to drive your vehicle at highway speeds to ensure you are perfectly satisfied with Safe T Plus tracking your vehicle straight. Slight drifts in steering may not show up until you reach highway speeds.

How many attempts should it take to center my Safe T Plus?

When installing Safe T Plus, to minimize the need to adjust and center Safe T Plus, try to sight-line your front wheels as straight as possible. On occasion, a centering adjustment may not be necessary. When a centering adjustment is needed, on average, it generally takes 1-2 attempts to center Safe T Plus. Can I use the chassis factory damper brackets to install Safe T Plus?

No. Unfortunately, this is against factory policy. We only allow genuine, factory-provided parts and products to be used with Safe T Plus Steering Control products.  In most cases, the existing steering damper brackets are of a lower grade steel material that does not meet Safe T Plus material standards. Altering, modifying, substituting, or creating homemade parts or accessories are strictly prohibited.  Doing so will not only invalidate your warranty but also negate any liability on Safe T Plus’ behalf.

Does my Safe T Plus have to be mounted parallel to the tie rod or can it be at a slight angle?

For best performance of Safe T Plus, practically all of our mounting locations are designed to be parallel to the tie rod. However, some mounts of Safe T Plus are designed to be at slight angles. However, anything beyond a 40 degree is not correct. If you find your Safe T Plus is mounted at an angle greater than 40 degrees, stop and give us a direct call 770-322-8727. Let us help you get Safe T Plus installed correctly.

What is the best way to remove the nuts from the axle suspension U-bolts to mount the anchor bracket?

Impact wrenches are the easiest and quickest method to remove the nuts from the front axle suspension U-bolts. If you do not have an impact wrench, breaker bar tools work well. You can purchase a breaker bar tool at your local auto parts store. We also recommended using a penetrating oil lubricant (i.e. PB Blaster) on the threaded axle U-bolts first before attempting to remove; it helps break loose rusted axle nuts and prevents de-threading and cross threading. PB Blaster can be found at any local hardware store, Home Depot, or Lowes.

What are the torque settings to tighten the U-bolts on the Tie Rod bracket?

Only torque down your U-bolts to the tie rod bracket at 20 foot-pounds of torque.  IMPORTANT NOTE: If you tighten the U-bolts beyond this setting, the tie rod bracket will starting bending around the tie rod which is dangerous. Please stop and call us direct at 770-322-8727 for immediate assistance. Your tie rod bracket and U-bolt kit will have to be replaced. DO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE IF YOU BENT THE TIE ROD BRACKET DURING INSTALLATION. SAFE T PLUS COULD GET BOUND UP WHILE TURNING YOUR VEHICLE WHICH CAN CAUSE AN ACCIDENT.

What are the torque settings for the 3” x ¾” bolts that mount Safe T Plus to each bracket?

Tighten the Safe T Plus 3” x ¾” bolts that mount the Safe T Plus unit to the anchor bracket and tie rod bracket to 80-90 foot-pounds of torque.  Using an impact wrench is the easiest way to tighten up your bolts.  Then use a torque wrench to test the settings.

What are the torque settings for chassis axle U-bolt nuts?

It is best to check your chassis manufacturer’s torque settings first and if available. Removing the nuts from the axle spring rear U-bolt can be challenging. In most cases, the Safe T Plus anchor bracket is installed in this location. Retightening the spring axle nuts securely to 240-280 foot-pounds of torque is what we’ve found most chassis manufacturers recommend. Again, check your chassis manual or contact your chassis manufacturer to verify these torque settings.

My bracket does not fit correctly. Can I modify it myself?

No, unfortunately, this is against factory policy. Please accept our apologies for the bracket not fitting correctly, but we only allow genuine, factory-provided parts and products. Altering, modifying, substituting, or creating homemade parts or accessories is strictly prohibited. Doing so will not only invalidate your warranty but also negate any liability on Safe T Plus’ behalf. Do I need an RGA (Return Goods Authorization) number to return my Safe T Plus under warranty?

Yes. Before any Safe T Plus products can be taken under warranty consideration, an RGA (Return Goods Authorization) number must be issued by the Safe T Plus factory. Dealers, distributors, or online resellers are not permitted to grant warranty consideration claims on behalf of the Safe T Plus factory. If you work through a dealer on a warranty related matter, unfortunately it will be in violation of Safe T Plus’ factory policy. Furthermore, your warranty claim and resolution will be handled directly with the dealer. Factory will not accept responsibility for the process or results. For an RGA number, please complete the Warranty Claim form on our website. The quickest method to acquire an RGA number is to complete the online form and provide several pictures/photographs of your Safe T Plus unit and its problem areas if visible. Upload buttons and features are available on our website.
